4Terrain Clutch Range: 4Terrain Ultimate

 

The 4T Ultimate with Patented ER2 Groove Design has a number of features that set it apart from the competition. Clutch kits are comprised of a cover assembly, clutch disc, release bearing, spigot bearing, and alignment tool (some kits also include a solid replacement flywheel or DMR). The cover assembly is finished with a premium corrosion-resistant surface finish that has excellent oxidation resistance over time. Furthermore, the clutch pressure plate features 4T Ultimate’s ER2 design technology.

The cover assembly is made of Spheroidal Graphite casting material, which has a yield strength 300 percent higher than standard castings. Heat dispersion is also improved by the material’s microstructure. The clamp load on the cover assembly is higher than on a standard cover assembly, resulting in increase torque capacity.

CAD/CAM technology is used to precision machine the patented pressure plate with ER2 grooves. In two ways, the design improves performance. First, it increases the torque capacity by increasing the mean effective radius, and second, it aids in cooling, allowing the friction material to operate at lower temperatures and thus with a higher coefficient of friction.

A special flywheel side friction layer is used on the clutch disc. This Aramid friction material has a higher coefficient of friction to increase the torque capacity while not negatively affecting driveability. Clutch fade is also lessened by 50% through the use of this material. 

These features ensure that the clutch system can transmit up to 60% more torque than a conventional Clutch Kit, making it appropriate for high-torque applications. Higher clamp loads, a larger Mean Effective Radius of the pressure plate, improved cooling, and a higher coefficient of friction materials on the clutch disc have all contributed to this increase in overall torque capacity.

4Terrain General Installation Notes

 

The function of the clutch is to transmit the power from the engine to the transmission and also to disconnect the power to allow gear shifting and the vehicle to stop. Clutches should provide:

  1. Smooth engagement, (no shudder)
  2. Positive drive, (no slip)
  3. Efficient gear change (no grating gears)
  4. Ability to absorb noise and vibration from the engine and to stop it from reaching the gearbox which can cause harmonic noise and or gearbox rattle, (roll over noise)
  5. Durability

If the clutch is held excessively at point of engagement (holding the vehicle on hills using the clutch) or by trying to rock the vehicle as is the case sometimes when 4WD driving on rough terrain the heat that is generated can be extremely high, which can cause clutch fade (similar to brake fade) even to point of the clutch disc linings burning to dust in the bell housing. Another way to look at a clutch is that it is a fuse in the driveline and like any fuse if there is too much asked of it, it will fail.

Please keep the above in mind next time you are overworking the clutch.

 TIPS

  • Make sure the dust boots and seals are in good condition to prevent water and mud ingress which may cause clutch concerns.
  • Don’t ride the clutch
  • If you do overheat the clutch allow it time to cool.
  • Use the gearing in the vehicle to your advantage instead of slipping the clutch.
  • Save the clutch in extreme conditions and use the winch.

A standard clutch will withstand some of punishment but if you have a highly modified vehicle or if you have experienced clutch concerns.

4Terrain Ultimate, More Than a Heavy-Duty Clutch

4T Ultimate with Patented* ER² Groove Design has several features which make the product distinctly new. It is comprised of a cover assembly, clutch disc and release bearing (Some kits also include a solid replacement flywheel or DMR).

The cover assembly incorporates a premium corrosion resistant surface finish, which exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation over a prolonged period of time. In addition the clutch pressure plate incorporates 4T Ultimate’s exclusive ER2 design technology.

The cover assembly’s pressure plate is manufactured from Spheroidal Graphite casting material and has a yield strength some 300% higher than standard castings. The materials microstructure also improves heat dispersion. The cover assembly incorporates greater clamp load than a standard cover assembly. This translates to more torque capacity.

The kit’s clutch disc has a unique flywheel side friction material. The Aramid friction material exhibits 50% less wear than a conventional clutch disc’s friction material. This material also reduces the effects of clutch fade. Fade is the decline in the clutch system’s ability to transmit torque as operating temperatures increase.

These features in combination with the previously mentioned microstructure of spheroidal graphite casting and ER² Technology allows the clutch kit to dissipate heat far more effectively, allowing the clutch to run cooler for longer.

It also means that the clutch system is capable of transmitting greater than 60% more torque than a standard Clutch Kit making it suitable for demanding conditions. This overall Torque Capacity increase has been achieved by higher Clamp Loads, increased Mean Effective Radius of the pressure plate, better cooling and higher coefficient of friction materials on the Clutch disc.

The Patented* pressure plate with ER² grooves are precision machined with CAD/CAM technology. The design enhances the performance in 2 ways. Firstly it increases the torque capacity of the cover assembly and secondly it assists with cooling which in-turn enables the friction material to operate at lower temperatures and therefore at a higher coefficient of friction. Again this enhances the torque capacity of the clutch.
